Chairs

We desperately needed chairs. Greg found some beautiful piece of furniture on eBay. Unfortunately it was in mahogany, so we decided to change the colour into warmer walnut. That was my first experience with renovating such a big piece of timber!

That glossy look needed 5 coats of varnish.

Chairs in a daylight.

Upholstery - my first experience.

Compare: an old one on the left and a new one on the right.

Me during the work.

One more look.

  1. Hi, Looks excellent. Must have been a very big job, any chance for a more detailed DIY?

  2. Thank you :-)
I sanded off old varnish with bosch sander using all range of sanding paper grades: 40, then 80, 120 and 240. It wasn't enough smooth after that but I decided to cover the chairs with one coat of walnut varnish. When it was dry I used steel wool to achieve dead smooth. Then I coated it 3 more times with the same varnish. I used super fine sanding sponge between coats. It is very important step! At the end I covered it with clear, glossy varnish (twiece).

Upholstery wasn't a big thing: all you need is scissors and stapler!
